Hacker site review

The hacker page was so helpful. The reason of that is I learned which parts of grammar I have mistakes and I tried to improve myself with this awesome source. Also, I think the examples of the hacker page are very helpful, because you can easily see what we need to solve and easy to select the correct one. I`ve learned some of these topics in my English education which helped me a lot to solve these questions and understand what is going on. Plus, I learned that with a single word sentence structure can change a lot. The meaning will be different with a single comma, wrong word choice, so on. In fact, we have learned in the class that clear sentences and understandable word choice is the most important issue in essays. Therefore, hacker page is an excellent source which might help to a person who wants to write a paper for her or his class. For instance, active and passive voice is one of the most scary nightmare for students, but hacker page gave me wonderful questions which helped me understand the difference of these two grammar topic. Overall, I find hacker page really helpful for those who have problems with these topics. Some examples that I`ve learned in this page;
Which one is active voice?
-Jane was encouraged by her supervisor to apply for the new position. (Passive)
-Jane`s supervisor encouraged to apply for the new position. (Active) The reason of that is supervisor is actor which is a subject.

Group Assignment for 1/24/12

8.1  Active vs Passive verbs
Active verbs form more powerful and effective sentances than passive verbs. (Using passive verbs isn't wrong but can be used intentionally to soften the action, downplay the main character, or when we don't know who the main character is).

How to recognize active and passive sentances.
  1. Find the subject (main character)
  2. Find the main verb (the action)
  3. Examine the relationship between the two (who is performing the action?)
    • If the subject is performing the action then it is active
    • If something else (named or unnamed) is performing the action then it is passive

8.2  Active vs Be verbs
Sentences that use be verbs are more week than sentences that use active verbs. (For example: be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been).

Be Verb: Sudden loss of weight can be an indicator of many serious health problems.
Active: Sudden loss of weight can indicate many serious health problems.

8.3 Active verbs (edit and compare)
Active:  Furkan cleans the room every week.
Passive: The room is cleaned by Furkan every week.

Spelling

First of all, spelling is really important for an essay. However, there are some words that has same spelling, but wrong meaning. These words are really hard to fix for spell-checkers.For example;
-Their moving here to be our neighbour. ( They`re)

Also, the relation between "ie" and "ei" is quite easy. If the word sound long "e" write "i" before "e". Plus, if there is "c" before that part it`s always "ei" such as:
"ei"
deceive, perceive, receipt, receive
"ie"
hygiene, patience, pierce, priest

Next, it is really common to use -ing, -ed, ‑es, ‑er, and -est. in English.
For example,
Cry – cried – crier- crying
Dry – dried – drier-drying

Travel to Another Country
            Like everybody I have a dream that to find a beautiful island and have a luxury vacation that will make me happy forever. I want to sleep in a hotel like a bamboo house, a nice private swimming pool, perfect room service, delicious food, and handmade wooden ship that I can sail around the island to see the beauty of the shore. Perhaps, one they it may become true, but to be realistic it can be a little bit difficult with my classes, and limited vacation times. Anyways, I had a simple Christmas break. During last Christmas break I went to Turkey to see my parents and friends. As always, it was a long trip to Istanbul from Minneapolis. Especially, the plane was extremely cold to handle. The air carrier gave everybody some sort of cloth that keeps people warm. That was the good thing for the flight. When I arrive to airport I went to store to exchange my dollars to Turkish liras. The person who is working in that store gave me tons of coins that I didn`t want to carry. So, I went to a store that I can spent these coins. I bought a small model house for my mom, man playing drum statue for my father to put his office, a ruler for my sister to use it in her class, an old fashioned woman statue for my second sister to show her how she looks like and a jar for my brother to save coins. When I go through passport gate and saw my family. They were so happy to see me and I was excited to be at Turkey back again after 4 month. When we were about to arrive home I saw a chestnut store. My father get me some to eat  because I missed that alot !

who am i

After I read all posts I saw that every person has different way to answer `who am I` question. Mostly, people talk about their ages, personal interests, family, and general things about their life. Finally, culture and the place or country of the person who answer this question makes answers different like each of them has different way to impress their feelings.
